Born in 1840, Kuroda Kiyotaka has made the greatest contribution to Meiji Japan in areas of colonization. His efforts to make Japan an imperial power contributed greatly to the dramatic expansion of the Japanese Empire. He also played a key role in transformation of Japan into a modern imperial power with his devotion to remove the Tokugawa Shogunate.

    • Second Prime Minister of Japan (April 1888 - October 1889)

    • Minister of Agriculture and Commerce (1887)

    • Minister of Communications (1892)

    • Vice Commissioner for colonization (1870)

    • Commander in the Boshin War

    • President of the Privy Council

    • Assistant to the Minister of Foreign Affairs

    • Assistant to the Minister of Military Affairs

  • fought in the ensuing Anglo-Satsuma War in 1863

  • put down forces loyal to the shogunate during the Boshin War

  • established the Satsuma - Choshu Alliance

  • served as envoy to Korea, concluding the Japan-Korea Treaty of Amity

  • went to US and returned with US advisors for assistance in colonization of northern island of Hokkaido

  • made Treaty of Kanghwa with Korea
